Case study: Transforming energy efficiency in the city of Schaffhausen with viboo

Published on
31 Dec 2024

Die City of Schaffhausen is at the top of Smart city initiatives in Switzerland and promotes sustainability, efficiency and innovation in urban infrastructure. Led by Smart City Director Ramon Göldi, Schaffhausen is pursuing the goal of implementing digital solutions that improve citizens' quality of life while achieving ambitious energy and emissions targets.

The challenge
One of the biggest challenges in building management in the city of Schaffhausen was improving energy efficiency in older buildings. The Bach schoolhouse, a listed building, was selected as a pilot project due to its considerable energy losses due to its age and outdated heating systems. The city faced several hurdles:

1. Cost reduction: The city aimed to reduce heating costs by optimising energy use in older buildings.

2. Sustainability: Schaffhausen wanted to reduce CO₂ emissions and improve the energy efficiency of historic buildings.

3. Digitalization: The project was part of Schaffhausen's smart city strategy and integrated digital tools for better decision-making and energy management.

The solution

To overcome these challenges, viboo worked with the city of Schaffhausen to use their advanced predictive control technology. The key components of the solution included:

• Smart thermostats: Predictive algorithms learn the thermal behavior of each room and predict energy demand based on heating plans and weather forecasts.

• Central management platform: A central interface for real-time monitoring, control and analysis of building performance via the viboo web app.

The results

During the 2023/2024 heating season, viboo's solution achieved measurable and impressive results. Energy consumption was reduced by 22%, which corresponds to a reduction of approximately 13 tons of CO₂ — a remarkable success that exceeded expectations. This saving was achieved without sacrificing the comfort of building users. Stakeholders confirmed the effectiveness of technology and recognized it as a decisive factor for Schaffhausen's energy goals.

Following the successful pilot project in the Bach school building, the city of Schaffhausen is expanding viboo's technology to other buildings. This strategic move will increase energy savings and further reduce CO₂ emissions to support the city's long-term sustainability goals.

Scaling for the future

Die City of Schaffhausen With their partnership, viboo and viboo underline the transformative effect of smart building technologies as part of smart city initiatives. By combining intelligent regulation, reliable connectivity and central administration, the city of Schaffhausen has taken a significant step towards its energy and sustainability goals.

This collaboration not only solves current challenges, but also creates a scalable basis for future building management in the city.
